Weberz Hosting Blog

Weberz Hosting has currently been experieicning website traffic latency that has been caused by the LINUX.UK web server in the Portland Data Center.  To minimize downtime and additional outages it has unfortuantely become necessary to temporarily disable access to this web server for the security and protection of our users and the data located on this server. Recently I have been writing more about SEO and SEO related topics.  Well today I realized that some of our less advanced readers might not know or understand what SEO is and how it works.  Every webmaster should know at least the basics of SEO and SEM since they can be the decision maker on whether a site thrives or dies on the net. (…)

Weberz is pleased to announce the release of our first Wordpress plugin, Comment Link Manager.  While trying to find solutions to the problems introduced by PageRank sculpting no longer working and the nofollow tag being worthless, we decided to create the comment link manager plugin.  The idea was to design a Wordpress plugin that allowed admins to disable comment author links until that user has posted an admin specified number of comments.  This can help encourage users to comment more by rewarding them with links from your blog. (…)

A few weeks ago at SMX Advanced, Matt Cutts made a comment during a Q&A session that seemed to shock the SEO industry.  The comment Matt made was that link juice that is assigned to a nofollow’ed link by Google evaporates instead of being reassigned to links that don’t contain the nofollow attribute.  Well after many speculating blog posts were made by SEO’s trying to understand the comment, Matt decided to post a clarifying post on his blog about page rank sculpting. (…)

Matt Mullenweg, founding developer of Wordpress, announced the official release of Wordpress 2.8.  According to Matt’s blog post on wordpress.org, the new release has greatly improved the speed of the system due to changes in the way Wordpress does styling and scripting.  Matt also mentions in his announcement that WP 2.8 has over 180 new features and more then 790 bug fixes. Let us start by giving a nice big thanks to experts in the SEO community.  It’s likely because of them that there are literally thousands, possibly millions, of Wordpress installations that setup with less than optimal settings.  Many unsuspecting and uneducated users look to this group of experts for ideas and techniques to improve their search engine rankings and to gather more website traffic.  Little do these users know that even some of the most popular people in this group of experts are handing out bad advice regarding how to setup Wordpress systems. (…)

Every now and then I get asked “What do you do for a living?” and after I answer the follow up questions always come without fail.  What is web hosting?  Why does someone need website hosting?  Of course there is always the other related questions such as “Why can’t I host my own website?” and “Why should I pay for web hosting?”.  These are all excellent questions and they deserve just as good of answers.  Lets take a look at exactly what “web hosting” is and why someone would need it. (…)

About six to eight months ago I found myself having problems getting enough time out of the day to manage a custom website for Weberz on top of fixing servers, answering support tickets, and generally trying to conduct business on a day to day basis.  So I decided to look into making at least one of those jobs easier by converting our website to be managed by a Wordpress installation.  The general idea was to use Wordpress as a CMS system and a blog platform in a single installation of the software.
The reason behind making such as change was simple.  Wordpress has such as huge following that the internet community at large has created plugins and themes for the system for almost every possible need.  This is great as it allows us to use those plugins rather then having to code custom pages in PHP on our old website to get similar features. (…)

On October 10th of last year we sent out a service announcement where we had mentioned a possible new data center for Weberz.  Today I am pleased to announce that this is in progress.  The final contracts for the data center were signed earlier this afternoon that wrapped up the final details of the new facility.
Our parent company General Pacific decided over a year ago to build a new facility for it’s electrical distribution services.  After many meetings with lawyers and the like, they were able to secure a property in Fairview, Oregon for the new facility.  During this time I had many meetings with upper management and we decided to take a look at the possibility of adding on to that new facility a data center for the Weberz Hosting division.  As it turned out, it was not only feasible but also financially smart to do so. Out on the interwebs there are thousands of tools focused on helping webmasters, site owners and business owners to get more out of their websites.  These tools can range from statistical analysis to link building and traffic generation.  With all of these available it can easily become overwhelming for a individual who doesn’t deal with it daily to get confused and easily fall into a scam or end up with sub par tools.  After all the last thing we want is to do something that’s going to get you site banned in the search engines because the tool you used was not completely on the level.
