Over the years the staff at Weberz have tried various FTP clients with varying levels of success. After discovering FileZilla we quickly rolled it out to all of our staff members.

FileZilla is an open source and is platform independent so it’s available on Windows, OS X and Linux. You can find it at filezilla-project.org. It supports both the FTP and SFTP protocols. The team behind FileZilla is also very active so updates and bugfixes are delivered on a regular basis.

Site Manager

One of my favorite features of FileZilla is the Site Manager that allows you to save your most commonly used connections for quick and easy access. Utilizing the site manager makes it easier when you have multiple logins and sites to keep track of.

A fair number of Weberz customers have multiple domains setup under one user account. You can utilize some of the advanced settings in Site Manager and set a default remote directory for the domain.

For example, with the weberz.com account I have my FileZilla set to automatically set the default local directory to /weberz.com. Thus every time I login to make modifications or transfer files to the server I’m automatically placed in the correct directory.

You could set the default remote directory for each domain you have hosted in your Weberz account within the site manager for quick and easy access to your files.

SFTP

Security should never be an afterthought. Our team at Weberz have implemented various policies and procedures to help keep our servers safe, secure and online. We recommend our customers do the same. SFTP is a protocol that carries the FTP traffic across an encrypted connection using an industry standard protocol called SSH. Using SFTP is an easy step our customer can take to help protect the identity of their accounts.

All of the Linux servers at Weberz are configured to allow SFTP access to our end users. Currently our control panel does not support SFTP with our Windows servers. The only requirement to use SFTP is shell access to your account. You can request shell access from within the control panel. Once shell access has been granted you can use SFTP to securely transfer your files to your Weberz hosting account.

FileZilla is an excellent and lightweight opensource piece of software that packs a powerful punch. We’ve made it part of our standard workstation configuration at Weberz. Will you?

This article was originally posted by Weberz Hosting at: <a href="FileZilla – Excellent Open Source FTP/SFTP Client" rel="external" target="_blank">FileZilla – Excellent Open Source FTP/SFTP Client

Changes to Credit Card Billing System for Hosting Customers

Announcements

Linux Hosting

Reseller Hosting

Windows Hosting

Billing

I just wanted to make a quick announcement to our hosting customers who are paying for their hosting using their credit/debit cards. During the process of rebuilding these servers we also moved the NS3 server to a new IP address at an offsite location. This will allow DNS lookups to continue resolving in the event of a data center wide outage helping eliminate extended downtimes due to bad DNS resolutions during the outage. Lately making these changes will also keep mail flowing for all of our customers who are using external mail servers during one of these outages if they are using our DNS servers for their DNS resolution services.

All resellers should be sure to update their DNS server IP address for the NS3 server at their domain registrar. If you don’t currently use the NS3 server for DNS services on your clients domains it is highly recommended that you start doing so at your earliest convenience. Due to the many different domain registrars available we are unable to provide you with instructions on how to update your name server IP’s at every one, however here is the instructions GoDaddy and Enom which seem to be the most popular.

GoDaddy Instructions For Editing NameServers

Enom Instructions
Resellers are able to find the Nameserver Registration page under the domains menu -> Advanced Tools after you login to your account.

New NS3 IP Information:
Hostname: NS3.resellerdomain.com
IP: 174.121.92.158

If you have any questions of comments, please feel free to use the comments section below or contact us via email at support@weberz.com.

This article was originally posted by Weberz Hosting at: <a href="New Offsite NS3 Name Server! This tends to work great for both the client and the designer. The client doesn’t need to spend time finding a reliable hosting company to use and the designer gets to access all of the clients files to be able to better serve the client. While this works out well for both parties, is the reseller getting the most out of those design clients? I know that many of our resellers do not.

What seems to happen most often is that the designer packages the domain registration and hosting services into the cost of the web design for the client. When the designer does this they are actually loosing revenue from the client that could potentially add up to thousands of dollars. In today’s economic times, I personally don’t know of any reseller that can afford to throw away that kind of revenue stream.

Now I can understand the idea of wanting to package these products and services for the design client. When you trying to sell the client on a new web design for a few thousand dollars the last thing you want to do is nickel and dime them on the domain registration and hosting fee’s as well. That’s a perfectly acceptable way of thinking but the freebies can’t last forever. The smart thing to do would be to write it into the design contract that you are providing these services for free for one year and then they will be a specified amount per month/year for each service.

The fact is that the designer has to pay monthly for thier reseller account they get from their hosting company, why shouldn’t they be charging those design clients and making up that cost. Most designers with reseller accounts would not only make enough to pay for their reseller account but also put some extra revenue in thier own pockets at the same time.

A perfect example of this is one of our own resellers who is in fact a web designer. This particular reseller hosts every design client his company has with his reseller account. I went and did a quick look at his account and noticed he has 96 linux clients and 23 windows clients. If he was to charge a simple $10 per linux account and $12 per windows account his monthly recurring revenue stream would be $1236.00/month. This easily covers his reseller account fee’s and puts some extra change in his pocket every month. This does not even include what he could charge for the domain registrations, hosting addons, ssl certificates and so on.

Now the question really becomes, why would any reseller/designer not be charging for these services? The only reason I can think of is that they either have way too much money and don’t need the revenue or they have bundled these services as part of a website maintenance plan that they do charge the client. I know this isn’t always the case for our resellers.

So are you charging your design clients monthly for thier hosting fees? Are you planning on starting now? The reality is that 2 hosting clients paying $10/month covers the cost of our value reseller plan.

This article was originally posted by Weberz Hosting at: <a href="Many resellers are not maximizing their revenue" rel="external" target="_blank">Many resellers are not maximizing their revenue
