Hosting Platforms

There are two different Web Hosting platforms that dominate the hosting market - Centos Enterprise Linux and Microsoft Windows®. Different web sites require different hosting environments. What you are trying to achieve determines where we will recommend to host your site. Each platform has its own unique strengths. Weberz Internet Consulting Group offers both types of web hosting. We listen to your goals and make a determination which platform best suits your needs, or you can pick your own if you wish. Here is a quick overview of the strengths of each platform.

Important: One of the biggest misconceptions is that you have to run Linux on your own computer in order for you to host your site on the CentOS Linux platform. That is not true. Which operating system you run on your computer is irrelevant in making your decision. This means that if you are running Microsoft Windows 98® or Microsoft Windows 2000® on your computer, you can still choose.

CentOS Enterprise Linux Hosting

CentOS Linux servers are known for reliability. They are so stable they are considered crash proof. CentOS Linux servers are capable of hosting thousands of web sites on a single server. While Microsoft Windows® servers may slow down under heavy load, Linux servers run without a problem. In many cases Linux servers run for years without having to be touched. This is why ISP's tend to use CentOS Linux servers for web hosting. The Internet was built on Linux servers. Other hosting platforms are new compared to Linux. Over the years Linux has been refined to the point where it is bulletproof.

Weberz Internet Consulting Group has standardized its servers on the CentOS Enterprise Linux distribution for our hosting customers. CentOS Linux is a rock solid Linux distribution. It is extremely popular among hosting providers and ISP's. You are much more likely to find free software for CentOS Linux. There is a wealth of free programs and utilities available on the Internet. For example, the Internet's most popular programming language, PERL, is absolutely free. There is a certain culture that has grown up around Linux. It's common for people to develop Internet applications only to offer them free of charge. These applications can be installed on CentOS Linux web servers without obligation. No matter what your need, you can probably find a free Linux application that will suit your application.

We recommend Linux hosting to clients looking for reliability. We also recommend Linux to clients who have existing PERL or PHP/MySQL applications on their site.

Microsoft Windows Hosting

Microsoft Windows 2003® is the big brother to the Windows operating system on all Personal Computers. Microsoft Windows 2003® includes a web server called Internet Information Server (or IIS). The difference between Linux and Windows is a programming language called ASP. ASP (short for Active Server Pages) allows programmers to easily interact with database engines that were made by Microsoft.

ASP is the preferred way to deliver Microsoft database driven applications to the web. Web databases represent the newest and most powerful technology on the Internet. ASP sites more closely resemble software than web sites. You can do ANYTHING with ASP. For example, you could deliver an online "Request for Quote" system for a large commercial construction firm where they can enter a bid, assign dozens of items to the bid, and assign vendors who they want to bid on the project. Then vendors sign in to their site (with username and password), view only their bids, enter price quote for each line item, and submit their bid. The site owner goes back online and reviews all returned bids sorted by price. They have found their online system far superior to the fax method of the past. Bids are returned in a fraction of the time, they are more accurate, and competition between vendors yields lower prices. Microsoft Windows 2003® provides a powerful solution to a database driven web site.

Microsoft Windows 2003® makes these systems possible. These are our "high end" web sites. Clients looking to extend the capability of their site (with programming and databases) are put on Microsoft Windows 2003® web servers.
